Let It Fall

It’s been an exhausting week and somehow I’ve fallen into a winter slump. As of right now there is nothing I am looking forward to more than summer. When I’ll be able to spend afternoons lounging in the park, biking through the city, music festivals, road-trips to Michigan, flirty summer dresses and fedoras, roaming vintage shops with my best girls. Speaking of, one of my best friends from back home is coming to visit for the night. Can’t wait to spend the evening with my girlies, I’m itching for a good night. But before the night begins, we have an afternoon full of shopping scheduled! I’ve been on the hunt for a good polka dot dress for awhile now and I plan on finding it today! Wish me luck. I received my camera earlier this week so plenty of pictures will be taken this weekend! (:

Temple Grandin

I’ve never been crazy about satellite television, I honestly don’t see how anyone could need the option of so many channels but then again this country lives off excess. My apartment came equipped with satellite, last night being as restless as the city is, I stumbled upon this amazing movie on HBO called Temple Grandin. It’s an incredible true story about this woman, amazingly played by Claire Danes, at a young age was diagnosed with autism. She couldn’t talk until the age of four, battled immense anxiety and was tormented by her peers. However, Temple was brilliant, she saw the world in an entirely different way then everyone else around her. With her Mothers encouragement and push to self sufficiency, Temple opened every door she was faced with and made her way through boarding school, college and even earned her Masters Degree.

I don’t want to spoil anymore of the movie because I recommend everyone watches it. I think it’s important to be reminded that no matter what battles we are given in life, we have the power and strength to overcome anything we are faced with. Temple’s story is an incredible example of that.

Sunday Blues

Spending my Sunday the way it should be spent; bed-ridden. Today will consist of reading (currently re-reading Brave New World), finishing Season 1 of “Twin Peaks” and plenty of veggies and hummus to fill in the gaps between. No laundry will be done, no dishes will be washed!

My amazing grandparent’s from back home in California have ordered me a new DSLR camera, which I’m expecting this week, so in the meantime you’ll have to make due with my non-sense!

Have a dreamy Sunday.

And so it begins

Let me just first begin by saying I am SO excited to be a part of and contribute to Spanish Moss Vintage. Everything that Suzanne Ford Carafano has done and is doing is beyond inspirational. And to be amongst the other incredible SMV girls is nothing short of an honor.

Since this is my first post, it only seems fit to give a little background of myself.

My name is Ariel Maroko. I’m originally from the San Fernando Valley. My family and I lived in this beautiful blue house we used to call the Crystal Palace, the backyard was lined with lemon trees and carpet roses. But through divorce my Mom and I drifted to the Midwest.
We lived in a small but charming brown house in the woods in a one stop light town called Beverly Shores, IN. Where I endured my first of many Midwest winters.
Years later, we made another move to a small beach town called New Buffalo, MI. Where winters were spent walking on the frozen lake, doing donuts in the beach parking lot and smoking cigarettes in my ‘93 Volvo (R.I.P) listening to Beach House with my best friend while parked at the beach. Summers consisted of sneaking into neighborhood pools in the middle of the night, aimless bike rides around town, thrifting followed by Carlson’s drive-in, basement shows and rooftop sun bathing.
When the time came to graduate high school and move on I couldn’t have been more eager to be in the city I love most. I made the big move in September of ‘09 to Chicago, where I am currently enduring my first semester of college at The Illinois Institute of Art and majoring in Fashion Marketing and Management. With aspirations to combine my two biggest passions in life; writing and fashion. I’m so excited to share my journey with all of you.

Until next time…
