DIY: Crop Top
I found the oversized jaguar shirt at a thrift store in Indiana years ago, and had worn it as a nightie for unfairly hot summer nights sprawled upon the covers. But I decided it was time to let the jag loose and go public. I believe I may have even unleashed a new summer music festival outfit!

Jules et Jim
Chicago has been enduring some miserable weather lately, so without question I’ve been staking out the storms curled up in bed watching movie after movie, catching the occasional spider leg of lightning from the corner of my eye.
Last night I watched, Francois Truffaut’s 1962, Jules et Jim. A French film concerning a love triangle between two friends and one impulsive woman. The film is a beautiful elegy about time. A time of war, love, obsession and art.
The dialogue held between the lovers and friends had me continuously rewinding and pausing to pencil everything down, it was so exceptional and concrete.

Catherine: “The sky we see is a hollow ball no bigger than that. And we walk upright, with our heads towards the center. The attraction pulls towards the outside under our feet towards that solid crust in which this bubble is enclosed.”
Jim: “How thick is the crust and what’s beyond it?“
Catherine: “Go and see. That’s no question to raise among gentlemen.”

Jules: “Keep in mind words cannot have the same meaning across languages because they’re not of the same gender. Unlike in French, “war”, “death” and “moon” are masculine in German, while “sun” and “love” are feminine. “Life” is neuter.”
Jim: “Life neuter?”
Jim: “Very pretty and very logical.”

Oh, Bevel
Bevel’s jewelry collection is unlike the ordinary. Not only are the pieces beautifully handcrafted but with each piece comes a story.

PROLOGUE: “The legend of the Hero Twins is recorded in the Quiché document called Popol Vuh. It constitutes the oldest Maya creation myth to have been preserved in its entirety.
As the story goes, the father and uncle of the Hero Twins, Hun Nunahpu and Vucub Hunahpu, were ball players. The noise of their ball pounding on the ground angered the lords of underworld. Nunahpu and Vucub Hunahpu were summoned down to Xibalba, the land of the demons, where they were tricked and finally sacrificed by the Death Gods and their helpers.
The jewelry of ball game represents chapters from the Hero Twin’s story of their adventure into Xibalba to seek vengeance for the death of their father and uncle. Their cunning ultimately resulted in ridding the world of the Xibalbian Demon Gods. What ever you place on your body is another chapter in the chronicles of the Hero Twins. As the storytellers of old wove tales of great heroes, so can you with our jewelry.
States of being: CLASSIC / MODERN / SACRIFICED
In ball game, each piece is in one of three states of being. These states are, Modern, Classic, and Sacrificed. Modern is mirror finished and smooth with an architectural futuristic appeal. Classic is modeled after the textures of weathered, aged, Mayan temples. Sacrificed is dark, and distressed with a highly textured, blackened surface.”

ABOVE: “As the story goes, the father and uncle of the Hero Twins were sacrificed. The head of Hun Hunahpu, the Hero Twin’s father, was suspended in a calabash trophy tree. Xquic, daughter of a lord of Xibalba, approached this tree. Hunahpu’s skull spat into her hand, which impregnated her with the Hero Twins. The curved bar represents the branch of calabash tree. The seven thistles represent the heads hung on the branch of the calabash trophy tree that Xquic visited on that day.”

ABOVE: “The curved bar represents the branch of calabash tree, the tree that the demons of Xibalba favor for hanging the heads of their sacrifices. Upon hanging the first head, the famed head-like shaped fruit of the calabash began to grow. This bracelet represents the tree before it took on it’s sinister role, and comes with one of three semi-precious stones: Garnet, a deep crimson stone, Onyx, black as night, and Quartz, pure and clear.”

ABOVE: “This double ring represents the Hero Twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque. The knuckled guards represent their heads, the large size of which emphasizes that it was their wits that defeated the demons of the Xibalba. The larger ring represents their arms, the smaller there legs. Should you ever find your self in trouble, don’t forget the Hero Twins.”

ABOVE: “Xibalba is described in the Popol Vuh, the Mayan creation myth, as a court below the surface of the Earth. Xibalba is home to twelve death gods who are responsible for human despair. This necklace represents their haven; the curved partition on the pinnacle, the road through hell.”

ABOVE: “Designed in the image of the claw of Camazotz, a bat god in ancient Mayan culture. Kame, meaning “death”, and sotz’, meaning “bat.” Camazotz was associated with night, death, and sacrifice. The guardian of the Underworld, Camazotz is worshipped for its rule over the darkness, and a powerful sign to mark against enemies.”

Love Boat
Denver married couple, Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore, make up the indie-pop band, Tennis. But their story doesn’t drift back to nights jamming in a basement. The duo saved money for years, bought a sail boat and sailed among the East Coast for eight months. It all began there. Each song is a documentation of their journey. How romantic, right?

July 27th brings 7”, “South Carolina”, via Fire Talk but until you’ll want to bookmark their Myspace page.

Berger Blues
Reading this incredibly romantic and fantastical poem by John Berger is completely haunting. I could only hope that one day I will be able to write, rather, compose something so moving about my own experience into the depths and wonders of love.

The “Real” Music Monday
For all the suffering us Chicagoans endure in the winter season, the perks of living here in the summer sure are worth it.
Every Monday Millinieum Park hosts concerts, amongst other events during the week, for free.
Yesterday, hundreds of people, young and old, filled the park to eat, socialize and enjoy the incredible performance of She & Him.

Close to the end of the set my friends and I ran and pushed our way to the front of the stage just in time for their encore performance. Where Zooey took my girl crush to an entirely new level with a cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, “I Put A Spell On You”. Literally, chills down my spine.
